The project "Ich wollte ein anständiger Mensch bleiben": Frauen aus Hessen politisch aktiv in der Kriegs- und Nachkriegszeit" was funded by the Hessian State Agency for Civic Education and dealt with the change of perspective on resistance against National Socialism and the political activity of women in post-war history. For a long time, the narrative of the "Men of July 20" was present in the German culture of remembrance. However, the resistance fighters against National Socialism were actively supported by their wives, who were themselves actors in the resistance. Starting with Clarita von Trott, the widow of Adam von Trott, the project focuses on women's biographies, not only those of resistance fighters, but also of women who were politically active in the post-war period.
The project provided pupils from Hesse with learning opportunities in which they were able to get to know Clarita von Trott, her time with Adam von Trott and her long life and commitment after the war. The students learned how to work with historical sources and how to do their own research. In the project itself, some had the opportunity to make concrete references to their own local lives and experiences in their own interviews with contemporary witnesses. Intensive discussions enabled the pupils to take a critical look at the narrative of "resistance in their own families" and explore the question of why so little is known about women resisters under National Socialism and politically active women in the post-war period.
Magnus Hose was responsible for the implementation of the project.
